Environmentalist seeks measures to discourage air pollution

An environmentalist, Mr Emmanuel Emechete, on Friday called on the Federal Government to introduce new measures to address the problem of air pollution nationwide.

Emechete made the call while speaking in an interview with a correspondent of the Nigeria News Agency  in Lagos.

He said that it had become imperative to tackle the worsening problem of air pollution nationwide, stressing the need to educate the public on the implications of bad air.

“Knowledge, capacity building, advocacy and awareness are important in addressing air pollution. The government should show the way so that the masses can follow.

“The government should not only formulate policies, it should implement the policies to check the factors contributing to air pollution.

“We need to canvass knowledge acquisition and capacity building on the implications of air pollution because many Africans do not understand the implications of their actions on the environment and their health.’’

Emechete said that people were showing more concern on what they would eat and on their present circumstances rather than focusing on their environments.

He called on environmentalists to rise to the challenge of educating children, youths and the general public on the effects of bush burning and other anthropologic activities.

The environmentalist argued that although Nigeria was far from the threshold of air pollution witnessed in other climes such as China and India, people should not relent in ensuring the best for Nigeria.

“In order not to get to an air pollution crisis situation, we need to encourage tree planting and a host of environment-friendly activities to curb air pollution.

“Policies against bad environmental practices by industries, especially international companies that have factories and manufacturing plants in the country must be enforced.

“There should also be a ban on the use of bad and expired vehicles on our roads.

“The policies against gas flaring, indiscriminate waste burning and bush burning should also be enforced vigorously,” Emechete stated.
