Ericsson new automated smart factory now operational in China



Ericsson on Tuesday announced that its automated smart factory for 5G and 4G radio technology products was now operational in Nanjing, China.

Fredrik Jejdling, Executive Vice President and Head of Business Area Networks who made this known in a statement said that the SEK 500 million smart factory stands among the most advanced manufacturing facilities in the industry.

Jejdling said that the technology products at the factory would benefit the Chinese communications industry to roll out 5G, increase network capacity and make Industry 4.0 a reality.

He said that at Nanjing, Ericsson has designed the first automatic assembly line for 5G radios, and upgraded automatic packing line that supports both 4G and 5G products.

“Ericsson has also modernized 5G testing equipment to further accelerate the device deployments. AI is now used to recognize components in the production line, increasing efficiency, accuracy and quality.

“State-of-the-art cellular IoT technologies in the Nanjing factory will enable an automated alert system for immediate attention of critical issues and faults Implemented at 45 work stations.

“It will also enables increased efficiency and speed of the production system,” he said.

Jejdling said that the Nanjing factory followed previous announcements on Ericsson digitalizing its factory in Estonia and establishing a smart factory in the US.

He noted that the factory in Nanjing was a great example of how next-generation technology was changing the future of manufacturing for the better.

“As a global company, we have gained insights from testing and applying 5G technology for industries and now we are bringing the learnings into our own factories, which will benefit the whole ecosystem.

“Our customers in China will benefit through the technology leadership, speed and capacity advantages that our automated smart factory will give us,” Jejdling said.

COVID-19: Ericsson highlights importance of connectivity during pandemic



The Head of Networks, Middle East and Africa at Ericsson, Chafic Traboulsi, says that it is important that service providers consider the significance of planning and optimising their networks during uncertain times.


He said this during a webinar organized by the organization to discuss network capacity, performance and digitization, as service providers prepare for unprecedented situations presented by the pandemic.


The Ericsson webinar spotlight the importance of maintaining mobile communications as critical infrastructure.


It also presented how Ericsson had been working with telecom service providers to manage their networks and face continued changes in traffic patterns.


According to Traboulsi, the webinar is a way of staying close to customers and supporting them in managing capacity and performance during the pandemic.


“During these challenging times, service providers are focusing their attentions on solving the myriad of challenges that have been created.


“Cellular, fixed broadband and wireless technologies are all essential for helping businesses of all sizes to keep things running remotely,” he said.


The webinar also afforded the organization the opportunity to highlight some of the major trends that had emerged in the telecommunications sector since the beginning of COVID-19 pandemic.


They include different traffic patterns, utilisation on the rise, and higher bandwidth demand.


Traboulsi said that the pandemic had caused a reduction in mobility, changed utilisation patterns, with high concentration on suburban areas.


“Fixed and mobile telecommunications networks have experienced major shifts in traffic as more lockdowns mean a decrease of data traffic in urban areas and an increase in suburban and residential areas.


“The lockdown also puts a dramatic day-long pressure on home connectivity due to work-from-home, online education, among others.


“As people are moving less, and working from home more, the largest share of traffic increases is being absorbed by the fixed residential networks,” he said.


He said that videoconferencing, gaming and streaming services were also experiencing major increases in usage.


Traboulsi said that Ericsson’s network design and optimization response had helped service providers handle the changing traffic patterns to sustain high-performing connectivity.


According to him, this is done through a multi-pronged approach which covers an immediate network uplift, planning and dimensioning and a virtual drive test.


He said that some of the new and improved solutions would play a key role in saving lives, while others would help save businesses, support public health and welfare services, and ease recovery after the crisis.


“The pandemic has led to a boom in the use of network-based communication and collaboration tools.


“It has made it easier to see beyond the efficiency-related, economic benefits of digitalization and recognize its broader benefits to society and humanity as a whole,” Traboulsi said.

Ericsson, MIT highlight 5G opportunities and challenges for telecom operators 



Ericsson and MIT Technology Review Insights say that 5G will provide operators with powerful capabilities that will  accelerate the digital transformation of companies across industries and geographies.


They said this in a  statement by  Tiarhan  Oghenejode of, the agency that handles their media activities and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos. 


The statement quoting the report titled ” The 5G Operator”  said that 5G network technology would  give telecommunications operators the ability to deliver many new applications and services in dynamic ways.


“Low-latency connectivity, ultra-high broadband speeds, and mobile edge computing capabilities will create myriad innovative business opportunities as well as consumer experiences.”


The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Insights is the custom publishing division of MIT Technology Review where researches and analysis are conducted, and a wide variety of content published.


The report also examined how Information Technology (IT) and network executives as leading operators worldwide were  creating a roadmap to 5G.


The report stated that 5G also included strategies for rethinking network operations, IT, business support systems (BSS), and business processes that would accommodate a growing number of digital service partners in rapidly expanding ecosystems.


It stated, “Many of 5G’s clearer use cases—such as autonomous vehicle fleets, internet of things, and management of fully-automated factories—are enterprise-focused.


“This gives operators a path to new revenue creation.”


It,however,  stated that such services were  still emerging, adding that  carriers do not possess all the knowledge or specific application development experience to effectively explore the service opportunities that 5G presents.


It noted that  the full value of 5G could only be got through collaboration by users.


“To take advantage of the infinite possibilities will require an ecosystem of partners, and partner collaboration will become the baseline for success.


“Partnerships will include hardware and software companies, traditional and digital players, and large and small innovators—all of which can bring specific application and domain expertise needed to exploit new niches,” the report said.


The report also stated that  5G would facilitate both organisational, as well as technological transformation.


“From sales and marketing to operations, IT, network management, pricing, and billing, there will be enormous changes that operators must plan for in 5G roadmaps.


“The internal processes of telecoms operators are usually more aligned to consumer than enterprise segments, and this will need to change as connected devices will  soon outnumber human subscribers.”


The report also noted  that  cloud migration would  top the agenda of network operators in their preparation for 5G.


“Customer experience is one capability that executives agree should be moved to the cloud.


“A virtualized, on-demand service delivery platform is the foundation upon which new innovative services will be created swiftly, in collaboration with the carrier, its service partners, and customers,” the report said.

Ericsson withdraws from Mobile World Congress Barcelona 2020



Ericsson says due to the outbreak of Novel Coronavirus, it has taken the decision to withdraw from the GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Borje Ekholm, President and Chief Executive Officer of Ericsson, in a statement on Friday, said that the health and safety of its employees and customers was a priority.

“Following the outbreak and continued spreading of the Novel Coronavirus, we have closely monitored the development and adhered to recommendations from relevant national authorities and international bodies, such as the WHO.

“The company has already taken a number of precautionary measures to ensure the health and safety of employees to minimise the impact on the company’s operations.

“After an extensive internal risk assessment, Ericsson has decided to take further precautionary measures by withdrawing from MWC, Barcelona 2020, the largest event in the telecommunications industry,” he said.

Ekholm commended the GSMA for doing everything in its power to control the risk.

He said it was very unfortunate they would not be attending but strongly believed the most responsible business decision was to withdraw participation from this year’s event.

“The demos and content created for MWC Barcelona will be showcased close to customers at local events, called “Ericsson Unboxed”, ” Ekholm said .

Ericsson earnings top forecast as 5G takes off



Telecoms equipment maker Ericsson beat quarterly earnings expectations on Thursday and lifted its market forecast for this year and its sales target for 2020, saying demand for superfast 5G networks was taking off more quickly than expected.

5G networks are at the centre of a brewing technology war between United States and China as they are expected to host critical functions from driverless vehicles to smart electric grids and military communications, underscoring their importance to national security.

Washington has put Chinese supplier Huawei on a trade blacklist and led a worldwide campaign to persuade allies to ban the firm from their 5G networks, alleging its equipment could be used by Beijing for spying – which Huawei has repeatedly denied.

Sweden’s Ericsson, which together with Finland’s Nokia and Huawei sells the bulk of radio access network equipment that is key for 5G mobile services, said it was now targeting sales of 230-240 billion Swedish crowns (23.5 to 24.5 billion dollars) in 2020, up from 210 to 220 billion previously.

“We see a much faster pace of introduction of 5G than expected,” Ericsson CEO Borje Ekholm told a conference call, citing particular strength in the United States and South Korea.

“Should we have expected this? To some extent we should have, but the reality is it’s happening even faster than we expected just a few months ago”.

Ericsson shares jumped as much as 7.4 per cent to a three month high of 89.94 crowns, pulling up Nokia’s shares in their wake.

The Swedish company’s adjusted third-quarter operating earnings rose to 6.5 billion crowns from 3.8 billion a year earlier, corresponding to an 11.4 per cent margin and beating the 5.2 billion mean forecast seen in a Refinitiv poll of analysts.

Still, Ericsson kept its target for an operating margin of more than 10 per cent for 2020, citing short-term pressure from some contracts and higher initial costs for new 5G products.

The company said it expected 5G deployments in China, where it has invested to gain market share, to start “near term”, adding they were likely to have “challenging margins” initially.

It changed its 2022 margin target to 12-14 per cent from more than 12 per cent previously.

Activist investor Cevian Capital, Ericsson’s largest owner by shares and third largest by votes, said the targets were conservative and the company could deliver more.

“Borje (Ekholm) continues to set targets at a level where it’s basically impossible not to exceed them”, Cevian managing partner Christer Gardell told Reuters.

Ericsson said it now expected the Radio Access Network (RAN) equipment market to grow by 5 per cent in 2019, up from July’s forecast for 3 per cent growth.

Ericsson shares were up 6.7 per cent at 0840 GMT, the biggest rise by a European blue-chip stock.

But they are still down 1 per cent since the firm’s second-quarter results in July, when it warned costs related to winning new contracts for its network business would likely hit profit margins in the second half of the year.

Credit Suisse said in a research note that Ericsson’s third-quarter results were “better on all metrics”, while Carnegie said the update was “very strong”.

While some analysts are expecting Ericsson to benefit from Huawei’s problems, Ekholm said the firm had still not seen any impact on sales from the turmoil surrounding its rival, which had instead made some customers more cautious about investing.

“What it has created is uncertainty in the market and perhaps a certain worry amongst equipment suppliers,” he told Reuters. “So if we see anything, it’s some short-term headwind rather than something positive.” (Reuters/NAN)

Ericsson, Brighter pioneer new treatment for insulin-dependent diabetes



Ericsson and Brighter, a Swedish health-tech company, says they have introduced the world’s first complete IoT-health solution for monitoring and treating insulin-dependent diabetes.

Fadi Pharaon, President of Ericsson Middle East and Africa, said in a statement on Thursday said that Actiste® Diabetes Management was an important milestone for how connectivity can transform people’s lives for the better.

“Our global partnership with Brighter has now reached a stage of real deliveries to the market, utilizing the global connectivity service, based on our IoT Accelerator.

“The result is an enhanced healthcare industry in the UAE and wider GCC, and an improved quality of life for diabetes patients,” he said.

Pharaon noted that the cellular-enabled Actiste® devices were managed by Ericsson’s IoT Accelerator and securely connected by leading communications service providers to deliver a consistent level of service and a single dashboard.

“This provides Brighter with a unified view regardless of where those devices are deployed in the world,” Pharaon said.

He said that Actiste® brings together all required functions into a single connected device: blood sampling, blood glucose measurement and insulin injection.

He explained that the device was delivered as part of a subscription service, designed to simplify patient’s everyday life and optimize and improve treatments.

” The total number of people living with diabetes in United Arab Emirates(UAE) was currently 1.2 million, according to The International Diabetes Federation (IDF).

“Brighter is now ready to deliver Actiste® Diabetes Management as a Service in the UAE and the wider Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) with cross-border mobile connectivity to be provided by leading communication service providers,” he said.

Henrik Norström, Chief Executive Officer, Brighter said that by partnering with Ericsson, they would be able to offer a truly seamless customer experience.

“No matter where patients decide to go in the world, their generated health and treatment data will always be securely stored and available to improve their treatments,” Nordstrom said.

5G subscriptions to reach 1.9bn by 2024 – Ericsson


Lagos, June 11, 2019 A multinational networking and telecommmunications company, Ericsson, on Tuesday forecasts that there would be 1.9 billion 5G subscriptions globally by the end of 2024.

Fredrik Jejdling, Executive Vice President and Head of Networks, who made this known in the mobility report released by the company for June 2019, said that there was an increase of about 27 per cent from November 2018 report which was 1.5 billion.

He noted that other forecasts have also increased notably as a result of the rapid 5G uptake.

“5G coverage is forecast to reach 45 percent of the world’s population by end of 2024. This could surge to 65 percent, as spectrum sharing technology enables 5G deployments on Long Term Evolution(LTE) frequency bands.

“Communication service providers in several markets have switched on 5G following the launch of 5G-compatible smartphones.

“Service providers in some markets are also setting more ambitious targets for population coverage of up to 90 percent within the first year,” he said.

According to the report, smartphones for all main spectrum bands are slated to hit the market over the course of this year.

Jejdling said that as 5G devices increasingly become available, more than 10 million 5G subscriptions are projected worldwide by the end of 2019.

According to the report, the uptake of 5G subscriptions is expected to be fastest in North America, with 63 percent of anticipated mobile subscriptions in the region being for 5G in 2024.

He added that North East Asia with 47 per cent follows in second place and Europe in third with 40 per cent.

“5G is definitely taking off and at a rapid pace. This reflects the service providers’ and consumers’ enthusiasm for the technology.

“5G will have positive impact on people’s lives and businesses, realizing gains beyond the IoT and the Fourth Industrial Revolution, “Jejdling said.

He however noted that the full benefits of 5G could only be reaped with the establishment of a solid ecosystem, in which technology, regulatory, security, and industry partners all had a part to play.

The report also projects that the total mobile data traffic continued to soar globally in Q1 2019, up 82 percent year-on-year.

He said that there were 1 billion cellular IoT connections globally, a figure that is expected to rise to 4.1 billion by the end of 2024.

Ericsson launches critical communications broadband portfolio

Lagos, Feb. 7, 2019 (NNN) Ericsson on Thursday said it had launched a critical communications broadband portfolio for the benefit of service providers.

Per Narvinger, Head of Product Area Networks, Ericsson, said that this would enable service providers to meet the business and mission-critical needs of industries and public safety agencies.

According to him, Ericsson has developed a new portfolio comprising three offerings: Critical Network Capabilities; Critical Broadband Applications; and Flexible Deployments for both local private networks, and nationwide mission-critical LTE networks.

“When communication is disrupted by minutes, seconds, or even milliseconds, it can have huge consequences for business operations or serious implications for public safety.

“Hence the need for fast and reliable communication is therefore paramount.

“Such critical communications are used in many areas: from first responders and nationwide emergency services to workforce safety in enterprises.

“There is a growing demand for business-and mission-critical broadband for such cases, service providers need to deliver the highest level of availability, reliability and security to meet this demand, ’’ Narvinger said in a statement.

He also noted that “the company sees growth opportunities for service providers and government operators by addressing new segments with LTE/5G networks’’.

Narvinger said that the critical broadband portfolio would enable customers to effectively secure the critical communication needs of sectors such as public safety, energy and utilities, transportation, and manufacturing. (NNN)

Tigo partners Ericsson to accelerate digitalisation in Senegal



Tigo Senegal, a mobile service provider, on Thursday selected Ericsson for its three years nationwide network modernisation project to accelerate digitalisation in the expanding Senegalese market.

Mr Rafiah Ibrahim, Head of Ericsson Middle-East and Africa, said that the terms of the new three years deal cover over 1, 000 existing sites, including the latest Ericsson Radio System (ERS) technology.

Ibrahim said that the ERS technology would refresh legacy infrastructure, roll out Long Term Evolution (LTE) across the country, modernise and expand Tigo’s mobile back haul network with Ericsson’s MINILINK.

He also said that Ericsson would provide Cloud Packet Core and Cloud Data Management and Policy solutions for the modernisation of Tigo’s core network to reduce operational expenditure and simplify the introduction of new user services.

Ibrahim said that additional solutions include Ericsson’s Mobile Packet Backbone Network (MPBN) and Operational Support System (OSS) migration to Ericsson Network Manager.

“Ericsson’s best-in-class LTE solutions will secure Tigo’s network performance and quality while delivering a differentiated experience to their subscribers.

“It will be improving both indoor and outdoor network coverage; Tigo will be able to deliver digital services including mobile data and mobile financial services across the entire Senegalese market,” he said in a statement.

Also, Mr Mass Thiam, the Chief Executive Officer of Tigo, said, “Senegal is on the brink of a huge digital transformation which will open up new business opportunities and revitalize the nation’s economy.

Thiam said that Tigo was partnering with Ericsson to rapidly upgrade their legacy network systems to deliver the quality, capacity and overall network performance that their subscribers demand.

Ericsson releases 10 consumer trends for 2019




Lagos, Dec. 12, 2018 Ericsson, on Wednesday released the eighth edition of its ConsumerLab trend report, highlighting 10 hot consumer trends for 2019, representing predictions of 34 million early technology adopters.

Dr Michael Bjorn, Head of Research Agenda at Ericsson Consumer & Industry Lab highlighted this in a report made available to newsmen.

Bjorn said the report would reveal that autonomous and mood-predictive technology could soon play a bigger role in people’s everyday lives.

He said that today, artificial intelligence could understand our personality just by looking into our eyes.

According to Bjorn, It is clear that technology adopters see a future where our devices know us better than we know them.

“Imagine a smart phone that not only knows what you do but also knows who you are, he said.

According to Bjorn, the first trend is awareables, which explains that more than 60 per cent of virtual assistant users think devices that understand our moods will be mainstream in three years.

The official said that the second trend had to do with smart quarrels, which said that over 65 percent of virtual assistant users thought smart speakers would argue like family members in three years.

“The Spying application which is the third trend projects that over 45 per cent of consumers think apps collect data about them even when they don’t use the app.

“The fourth trend which has to do with enforced agreement says that always having to accept data collection cookies annoys 51 per cent of consumers, ‘’ Bjorn said.

According to him, the fifth trend which is Internet of skills explains that more than 50 per cent of Augmented Reality (AR) or Virtual Reality (VR) users want apps, glasses and gloves that give virtual guidance for practical, everyday tasks.

“The sixth trend which has to do with ‘Zero-touch Consumption’ explains that half of virtual assistant users want automated bills and subscriptions, as well as self-restocking household supplies.

“The seventh survey on mental obesity says that 31 per cent of consumers soon expect to go to ‘mind gyms’ to practice thinking, as everyday decision-making becomes increasingly automated.

“The eighth survey which is ‘Eco me’ reports that 39 per cent of consumers want an eco-watch that measures their carbon footprint.

“The ninth trend talks on ‘My digital twin’ which explains that 48 per cent of AR or VR users want online avatars that mimic them exactly, so they can be in two places at once.

“The last trend which has to do with ‘5G automates society ‘ says that about 20 per cent of smartphone users believe 5G will better connect Internet of Things (IoT) devices, such as household appliances and utility meters, ‘’ Bjorn said.

Dr Pernilla Jonsson, Head of Consumer and Industry Lab, Ericsson said that we had already entered the age when humans and intelligent machines were  interacting and working together.

“So far, we have only taken small steps into the future. Most of the zero-touch future is yet to be developed and how we create that future is still in our hands.’’ Jonsson said in a statement.

The Nigeria News Agency reports that the insights in the report were based on Ericsson ConsumerLab’s global research activities of over more than 23 years,.

It is primarily drawn on data from an online survey conducted during October 2018 of advanced internet users in 10 influential cities across the world.
