A 43-year-old Estate Agent, Matthew Bassey, on Thursday appeared before an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly swindling a tenant of N280, 000.
The Police Prosecutor, Insp. Donjour Perezi, told the court that the defendant was arraigned for allegedly obtaining money under false pretence.
Perezi said that the defendant, who resides at Ogudu in the Ojota area of Lagos, committed the offence on Jan. 29, 2018 at No. 4, Prince Oyewunmi Str., Ogudu.
He alleged that the defendant under the pretext of being an Estate agent, collected N280, 000 from the complainant, Dare Ayanfeso, with a promise of providing him with a one room apartment.
The defendant, however, converted the money to his personal use, instead of fulfilling the agreement between him and the complainant,’’ the prosecutor explained.
Perezi said since March 2018, the defendant had gone into hiding, only to resurface sometime in August, this year, and was arrested.
The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Sections 314(1)(a) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The Magistrate, Mrs Bukola Mogaji, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
Mogaji ordered that one of the sureties must be either a community leader or a clergyman, and adjourned the case until Oct. 14.
