EU elections: Macron’s party pitches massive ecological shift

In an election programme published on Wednesday, Macron’s La Republique en Marche said the funds would foster the development of clean energy and transportation and allow workers to be re-educated for the ecological transition.

The party has also called for an end to the use of the herbicide glyphosate by 2021 and cutting pesticide use in half by 2025.

“We are the last generation that can act,” the programme said. “We are also the first to have all the solutions on hand to reconcile ecology with the economy, the environment and agriculture.”

This is why an ecological policy shift is the “priority,” the party said.

The programme, led by former European affairs minister Nathalie Loiseau, is due to be presented on Thursday.

Loiseau is considered one of Macron’s close confidantes.

La Republique en Marche is aiming to beat the party of Macron’s political rival Marine Le Pen.

Le Pen’s far-right National Rally and the anti-immigration Danish People’s Party have joined a new alliance of far-right, eurosceptic forces hoping to make electoral gains in the European Parliament election.

Italian Interior Minister, Matteo Salvini, leader of the League, has been a strong voice for the formation of a single far-right group in the EU parliament.

Other Republique en Marche proposals, including an EU-wide minimum wage and an agency for the protection of democracy, are based on Macron’s broader plans for Europe, which he pitched in a newspaper piece published across Europe in March.
