Ex-lawmaker calls for more women in politics

Mrs Chinwe Monu-Olarewaju, a former member, of Delta House of Assembly, representing Oshimili South Constituency, has called on women to be more involved in politics.

Monu-Olarewaju made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Asaba on Saturday.

The former lawmaker, who is the National Secretary of the Nigerian League of Women Voters, noted that the participation of women in the 2019 general elections was low.

She said the number was not good enough for the development of democracy in Nigeria.

Monu-Olarewaju said the United Nations was interested in assisting Nigerian women to grow politically but women needed to be active and enthusiastic about it.

“Women should start preparing for the 2023 elections in earnest and they should take advantage of the UN package to explore their potential in politics, using their numerical strength as an edge,’’ she said.

The former lawmaker who was also a one-time Commissioner for Commerce and Industry in the state, said that women, particularly in Delta, should endeavour to mobilise fully for the 2023 elections.

“Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa’s administration has given them cause to support the PDP and work for its victory in 2023, ” Monu-Olarewaju said.
