Expert wants heads of organisations to enforce safety rules for workers

Abuja, April 28, 2019 Dr Victor Fayomi, a General Practitioner with a Private Hospital in Gwagalada has advised organisational heads to produce safety manuals for staff  members to prevent occupational hazard in their offices.

Fayomi said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja to commemorate the World Day for Safety and Health at Work adding that such rules should be enforced.

The theme for the Day is “Safety and Health and the Future of Work”.

He said all professions and vocations had health risks especially as they pertained sustaining bodily injuries, saying that most of the injuries were usually work-type specific.

“Construction site workers are prone to falling from heights or having instruments fall on them, healthcare professionals are at risk of needles’ prick injuries while electrical engineers risk electric shock.

“Manpower is the single most important factor in any discipline or enterprise, hence staying healthy and physically fit is non-negotiable in the work place,’’ he said.

Fayomi said the use of screen guards on computers should be introduced for those whose work involved use of computers to prevent future eyesight defects.

He suggested compulsory wearing of ear mufflers for those working with noisy machineries to prevent deafness and use of helmets and boots for construction site works.

Fayomi said the Day should feature training and retraining of workers on safety precautions related to their work, saying it was important not only for professionals but artisans too.
