Experts harp on enhanced use of forensic in crime investigation

By Mateen Badru
Lagos, Feb. 20, 2019 Security experts in Lagos on Wednesday said intensive use of forensic by security operatives in crime investigation would increase their chances of busting the perpetrators and achieving accurate results.

The experts, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria in separate interviews, said the use of forensic would save time in crime investigation and would likely give accurate result.

Use of forensic in crime investigation is a scientific technique of analyzing criminal cases in a way that puts investigators ahead of criminals.

Mr Folarin Tunwase, Head Operations, Sigma Safety, said that crime investigation could only be efficient when forensic was utilised, especially in murder-related cases.

“Crime investigation has gone beyond pencil and paper. For an efficient result and accurate investigation, forensic has to be involved so that evidence gathered can be confidently tendered.

“However, security agents especially those at the homicide section should be trained on crime scene investigation so that evidence will not be tampered with,” he said.

Mr James Osagie, Chief Operational Officer at `The Bay Safety and Security Consultants,’ said use of forensic as modern day technique in crime investigation was the way to go as criminals now try to outsmart detectives.

“Officers in charge of investigation now need to up their game as criminals are now trying to leave no traces of crimes they commit,” he said.

A police prosecutor, who pleaded anonymity said that most cases being thrown out by the court for want of diligent prosecution happened that way because forensic was not utilised in the investigation.

“Those cases successfully prosecuted were because they were diligently investigated with the use of forensic, especially murder cases.” he said.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Intelligence Investigation Department (SCIID), Panti, Yaba, DCP Yetunde Longe, told NNN that the police usually utilized forensic during investigation contrary to some beliefs.

“We do not visit crime scene without the presence of a pathologist, contrary to the belief by some people that police do not use forensic during investigation.

“I just got back from a crime scene in the company of a pathologist from Lagos State University Teaching Hospital. We work together to determine the kind of crime especially when a dead body is involved.

“It is professional we go with them so that evidence at the crime scene are not tampered with. They take their time to sweep the crime scene so that adequate evidence can be gathered,” she said.

DCP Longe disclosed the over 100 treated murder cases by the SCIID in 2018 were accomplished as the command utilized the Lagos State DNA and Forensic Centre to achieve result.
