Farmers clear land in Nasarawa, seek timely distribution of fertilizer




Keffi (Nasarawa State) April 23, 2019 Some farmers in Nasarawa State have commenced clearance of their farms for the 2019 cropping season, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.

The farmers said on Tuesday in separate interviews with NNN in Keffi that they expect the state and local governments  to commence the distribution of fertilizer and other farming inputs, to ensure seamless farming activities.

According to them, this is the right time for the government to distribute the inputs as the rains set in for a new planting season.

Mr John Agu, told NNN at his farm in Keffi that “timely distribution of fertilizers and other farm inputs will ensure good harvest and boost food production.

“One of the major problems facing farmers, especially rural farmers is also lack of access to credit facilities and we also expect government to give us soft loans in order to boost food production as no society can live comfortably and survive without agriculture.

“Agriculture is the major source of livelihood of every family, nation and its importance cannot be overemphasised to the development of any society.”

He added that for farmers in the state to have hope of bumper harvest, the government must provide  the necessary inputs early.

Another farmer, Mrs Hauwa Mohammed, said farmers will be happy if they could get fertilizer and other inputs now.

According to her, adequate attention needed to be given to agriculture nationwide to tackle current poverty and hunger in the land.

Mrs Mohammed noted that late distribution of fertilisers and others farming inputs affects output and make farmers to incur losses.

Similarly, Messers Emmanuel Joseph and Danjuma Tanko, also appealed to the government to ccommence the distribution  of the inputs to assist farmers utilise them on time.

They, however, commended Gov. Tanko Al-Makura for his consistency in giving priority to agricultural sector in the last eight years of his administration.
