FCTA collaborates with WACS to offer free surgeries

The Federal Capital Territorial Administration (FCTA) says it is collaborating with the West African College of Surgeons (WACS) to offer free medical surgeries in the FCT.

Dr Mathew Ashikeni, the Director of Special Duties, Health and Human Services Secretariat (HHSS), FCTA disclosed this to the Nigeria News Agency on Friday in Abuja.

Ashikeni said that the one-week medical outreach, which started on Feb. 9, was planned as a prelude to the organisation’s 60th national conference and scientific meeting.

He said that the FCT Minister, Malam Mohammad Bello, would open the conference scheduled to hold between Feb. 17 and Feb. 21.

The director said that members of the college, who are mainly specialised surgeons, gynaecologist, ENT surgeons, ophthalmologist and radiologists, would conduct the outreach in eight general hospitals in the territory.

The general hospitals listed for the exercise include those in Bwari, Kubwa, Kuje, Kwali, Wuse, the Federal Medical Centre Jabi, Rachel Eye Hospital and the Garki Hospital.

Venues outside the FCT, where the medical outreach will also take place are the General Hospital Lambatta in Niger, General Hospital Mararaba, Nasarawa State and Specialist Hospital, Lokoja in Kogi.

The director, therefore, called on the area council chairmen where the exercise would take place to mobilise residents, especially those with any surgical conditions to the nearest participating health facility for the registration.

NAN gathered that the WACS was established in 1960 with a membership of 25 Surgeons.

The membership now consists of more than 6000 fellows in seven surgical specialities from 18 countries in West Africa.

The mission of WACS is to promote postgraduate professional surgical education, disseminating surgical knowledge and technical skills toward the attainment of the highest possible standards for overall protection of the member countries’ health.

WACS now has more than 220 accredited surgical training programmes in 120 institutions across the West African sub-region.
