Turkish authorities on Thursday said they have detained a suspected female suicide bomber in the South-Eastern city of Sanliurfa before she could detonate the explosives at a central avenue.

According to the state news agency Anadolu, police were able to safely defuse the bomb, saying the woman initially panicked and tried to run away after she realised she was being tracked.

The woman, whose nationality and name were not immediately known, was captured on Hasimiye Square in the city centre, carrying a bomb in a plastic bag.

Subsequently, the street was re-opened after the bomb disposal unit left the scene, some 80 km from its border with Syria.

Turkey was hit by a series of deadly bomb attacks between 2015 and 2017, blamed on outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and Islamic State.

“On Thursday, a trial continued in Istanbul of 58 defendants over their alleged involvement in a 2017 shooting at a night club in Istanbul, which killed 39 people,“Anadolu said.(dpa/NAN)
