Food security: Global quarantine community strategies mitigating challenges of plant health

The Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service (NAQS) says it will host the global plant quarantine community to address critical issues and challenges of plant health, food quality and food security.

Dr Chigozie Nwodo, the Head of Media, Communication and Strategies of NAQS disclosed this in a statement made available to Nigeria News Agency on Thursday in Abuja.

He said that senior plant quarantine policy makers and administrators from all regions of the world would converge on Nigeria for the 31st Technical Consultation (TC) among Regional Plant Protection Organisation (RPPOs) from Oct. 21 to 25.

“This Technical Consultation is the very first to be held in Africa.

“As the National Plant Protection Organisation for Nigeria, the NAQS has the honour to host the historic assembly on behalf of the country and the continent.

“African Delegation to the Commission on Phytosanitary Measures (CPM) deferentially conceded the right to host the TC to Nigeria at the 12th session of the CPM in Incheon City, South Korea in 2017 following high-stakes effort by the Director-General, NAQS, Dr Vincent Isegbe.

Nwodo emphasised that the technical consultation among RPPOs would place spotlight on the Nigerian plant health system.

According to him, the TC will cast bold relief to Nigeria’s remarkable stature and in the international quarantine arena.

“On the sidelines of the event, the DG of NAQS, Isegbe, will advance interactions with potential partners to secure multiple points of access for Nigerian agricultural commodities in the export market.” (NAN)
