FRSC, FMC partner to assist drivers with health challenges in Bayelsa

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has gone into partnership with the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Bayelsa to assist drivers with health challenges and reduce crashes on the roads in the state.

Mr Ikechukwu Igwe, FRSC Sector Commander in the state, in an interview with the Nigeria News Agency on Tuesday in Yenagoa, said that the partnership was in place to ensure that drivers were regularly checked to be healthy before using the road.

He said that the FRSC was ready to collaborate with any corporate group or organisation that would promote safety on the road and reduce crashes in the state and nation at large.

The commander said since the Corps came up with the idea of collaborating with the Department of Community Medicine in FMC in 2018, it had carried out thorough eye and diabetic checks, among others, on drivers.

“This year, 2020, we are going to ensure accident-free roads; the hospital, FMC, has created a programme that ensures drivers go on regular checks to enable them know their health status.

“We recorded good results, especially in 2019, where we had a drop in road crashes because of drivers’ regular checks; when you have bad sight, you are not fit to use the road,” Igwe said.

According to FMC’s  registrar in Yenegoa, Mr Fidelis Otokolo, the programme created by the hospital is called “Well Person Clinic” and is to assist people at minimal charge.

“We have been involved in medical outreach with the FRSC in the state for a while now. It is aimed at ensuring that the drivers are in good health before using the road and prevent accidents.

“Since the exercise began, we have noticed that majority of drivers have alarming blood pressure value; some do not even know that they suffer from BP. So, that is why we have introduced what we call “Well Person Clinic” for them.

“So, if the drivers can embrace the programme, it’s going be a win-win affair for both the corps and the drivers.

“Like cars and engines, our body too needs servicing to perform optimally on daily basis. Stoke is one of the complications of elevated blood pressure. If you are going with strenuous activities, you can come down with a stroke.

“The programme will not stop, and it is not going to be like the normal hospital check, that you have to pass through stress for you to access it. Though you will obtain the hospital card and open a folder, the cost is minimal.

“To overcome these health challenges like BP, bad eye sight, diabetes and other related diseases, stay away from excess intake of alcohol and do away with excessive smoking. Eat good food and do regular exercise,” he said.
