Furniture maker in court over alleged unlawful possession of firearm

Ikeja, April 15, 2019 A furniture maker Olalekan Sanni, 27, on Monday appeared in an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’’ Court charged with unlawful possession of firearm and conspiracy.

Sanni, whose address was not provided, is being tried for conspiracy and unlawful possession of firearm.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Victor Eruada, told the court that Sanni and others still at large, committed the offences on March 20, at 1:30 p.m. at Olateju Alaka in Mushin, Lagos.

Eruada said that the defendant was caught by the police with an unlicensed locally-made single barrel pistol and three cartridges.

“When he was asked how he came about the items or what he intended to do with them, he could not give any satisfactory explanation.’’

The prosecutor said that the offences contravened sections 411 and 330 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Section 330 of Illegal Possession of Firearm provides for a two-year jail term.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs M. I. Dan-Oni, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

Dan-Oni adjourned the case until April 30, for substantive hearing.
