Minna, Feb. 16, 2019 (NNN) The Campaign for Democracy (CD) group in Niger, has appealed to Nigerians to have faith in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in spite the shift in 2019 general elections.

Alhaji Abdullahi Jabi, Chairman of the pro-democracy group, made the call during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NNN) in Minna.

“We should not be discouraged by INEC decision to postpone the 2019 general elections. I am sure it is to ensure the conduct of free, fair and credible elections.

“We should have faith in INEC and give it benefit of the doubt for us to come out on the rescheduled dates and cast our votes for the candidates of our choice,’’ he said.

Jabi said that the participation of the electorate in the electoral process would give it credibility, and give the people the power to vote and defend their vote.

“I know that it is discouraging due to the inconveniences associated with it, but it is worth it, if we want our votes to count.’’

He also urged Nigerians to see the postponement of the elections as an act of God to better the nation.

Jabi, however, decried a situation where INEC was still struggling with challenges of logistical and operational inadequacies.

“This is our 6th consecutive general elections, so we are supposed to have overcome all these.

“It is unfortunate that it happened this way, but I appeal to the political parties and electorate to keep hope alive by giving INEC a second chance.

“It will not have any other game to play on us on the rescheduled dates.’’

NNN reports that INEC postponed the Presidential and National Assembly elections from Feb. 16 to Feb. 23.

It also rescheduled the Governorship, State Assembly and Federal Capital Area Council elections from March 2 to March 19.

Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of INEC said the postponement was due to logistics and operational plan challenges facing the commission.

He, however, expressed the determination of the commission to conduct free, fair and credible elections as another reason for postponing the elections.(NNN)
