Group seeks justice for victims of sexual, gender based violence

By Olasunkanmi Onifade

Abuja, July 9, 2020 (NAN) International Community of Women Living with HIV West Africa (ICWWA), has appealed to the Federal Government to ensure that victims of sexual and gender-based violence receive Justice.

The group made the appeal in a communique signed by the Regional Director of ICWWA, Mrs Assumpta Reginald at the end of a three day workshop on Sexual and Gender-based Violence (SGBV).

Reginald also said the group wants justice for the alleged rape of a 3-month-old baby, which occurred in Nasarawa state.

She said the act was not only barbaric, but unacceptable and should be condemned in all ramifications by well-meaning Nigerians and non-Nigerians alike.

“The full wrath of the law should be brought to bear on all perpetrators of sexual and gender-based violence.

” That the gender desks in the Nigerian Police be strengthened to proactively respond to cases of sexual and gender based violence including rape and killing of innocent Nigerian girls and women .

” That all perpetrators of sexual and gender-based violence be publicly named and shamed to dissuade others,” she said.

Reginald said the Nigerian Police should desist from the habit of antagonising victims of violence.

She advocated that sexual and gender-based violence be declared a national, regional and global emergency, adding that Gender Response Team be extended to all states in the country.

Reginald said that contraceptives commodities be made free for all adolescent girls and women. (NAN)
