A group, Centre for the Vulnerable and the Underprivileged (Centrep) has urged the police in Delta to apprehend the suspects who shot and wounded a lawyer, Mr Joseph Sini on Tuesday.
The Executive Director of Centrep, Mr Oghenejabor Ikimi, made the call in a statement on Thursday in Warri.
Ikimi, a legal practitioner, called on the state Commissioner of Police (CP), Mr Adeyinka Adeleke, who confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria , to take urgent action.
The hospitalised victim was said to have been shot at close range by two unknown gunmen on Udu Road, Udu Local Government Area of the state, at about 7:30pm.
“The victim was shot at close range by two gunmen while attempting to board his vehicle home after the day’s work,” he stated.
The executive director quoted the victim as saying that the gunmen sped off the scene in a car.
“Luckily for the victim, he was rescued by sympathisers and rushed to the hospital soaked in blood where he is currently recuperating.
“We are not oblivious of the fact that Mr Austin Icheghe, a former Chairman, Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ughelli branch, was murdered in Ughelli in a similar fashion on April 16, 2015.
“We are also not oblivious to how Messrs. Horace Dafiagho and Samuel Ekuwaju, two private legal practitioners in the state, were dastardly murdered in cool blood by unknown gunmen on March 27, 2014.
“It is in the light of the foregoing, that we call on the CP to ensure that the culprits are apprehended and brought to book accordingly to serve as a deterrent to others in the unholy trade,” Ikimi stated.
