Mr Chukwuemeka Ekezie, the Coordinator, Youths Against Substance Abuse (YASA), has expressed worry over the increasing wave of drug abuse among the nation’s youths.
Speaking in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NNN) in Umuahia on Friday, Ekezie admonished the youths to shun the act because of its huge negative implications on the nation and their health.
He identified lizard faeces, fuel and stench from the toilet soakaway as some of the substances that were being abused by the youths.
He called for collaboration among all the stakeholders, including government and non-governmental organisations, in the fight against the scourge.
Ekezie said: “YASA is interested in tackling drug and substance abuse, which can only be stopped by using a multi dimensional approach.
“All hands must therefore be on deck to tackle the hydra-headed monster.”
He underscored the need for youths to understand the dangers associated with drug and substance abuse so that they would be persuaded to abstain from it.
Ekezie said that the group, in collaboration with the Abia Government and National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, recently organised an awareness march to check the menace.
According to him, “the group marched through the major streets of Aba, sensitising the youths on the dangers of substance abuse.”
He expressed delight that the wife of Abia Governor, Mrs  Nkechi Ikpeazu, had promised to support the group toward the realisation of its objectives. (NNN)
