Gumel Emirate warns against illegal felling of trees

The Gumel Emirate Foundation in Jigawa on Monday warned residents against illegal felling of trees.

Chairman of the foundation and the Danamar of Gumel, Alhaji Sani Babandi, gave the warning in Gumel while inaugurating a 13-man committee to check illegal logging in the emirate.

He noted with dismay that there was an upsurge in illegal logging, which would damage the environment if not properly checked.

“ If we don’t do the needful, very soon all our trees will be cut for firewood as it has been the case in neighbouring Suletankarkar,” Babandi said.

He urged the committee, chaired by Alhaji Ali Dandidi, to ensure they educate the people on the dangers of indiscriminate felling of trees.

The chairman listed the terms and references of the committee to include providing 10,000 tree seedlings for transplanting and liaising with government and security agencies to sanction people involved in logging.

In his remarks, Dandidi, a renowned Pharmacist, thanked the emirate for the appointment and assured the people that he would not betray the trust reposed in him.

He solicited for the cooperation of members of the committee and the people in the area to succeed in their assignment.
