Ondo 2020: Ilaje-Ijaw group unites for Kekemeke

The Ilaje-Ijaw United Front (IIUF), a socio-political group, has assured Isaac Kekemeke, a governorship aspirant in the All Progressives Congress (APC), of its support in Ondo State.

The assurance was given by the President of the group, Sylvester Ikuejamoye, during their solidarity visit to the frontline gubernatorial aspirant in Akure on Tuesday.

Ikuejamoye also pledged that IIUF would contribute its quota to the aspirant’s success at the forthcoming July 20 party primaries.

He recalled the role played by Kekemeke in settling the war-like hostilities between the Ilaje and the Ijaw when he was the Secretary to the State Government under late Gov. Olusegun Agagu’s administration.

According to him, the two ethnic groups had been engaged in ethnic hostility, leading to loss of lives and properties.

“We are aware that you brokered peace by inviting the Agadagba and the Olugbo to Akure, where you restored the peace and made them embrace each other, putting an end to the hostilities.

“That is leadership per excellence, and we owe you our gratitude for that feat.

“We also recall the unique cooperative loans scheme that you introduced to our womenfolk when you were in government.

“The scheme has grown from N2.5 million that you funded, free of charge, to over N18 million now.

“The scheme has released our women from the hands of hitherto burdensome loans schemes with their exorbitant interest rates compared to yours of relatively small interest rate,’’ Ikuejamoye recalled.

He said the IIUF “note your plan to broaden this in our area and beyond it to the state level when you are privileged to assume office as our governor’’.

According to him, the forum has more than enough reasons to throw its weight behind Kekemeke.

“Ours is not a lightweight as we are well rooted in Ilaje and Ese-Odo local government areas.

“We have been promoting youth development through academic and sports competition coupled with scholarship and trophy awards`.’’

Responding, Kekemeke thanked the group for supporting him, expressing delight that his past contributions to the area were not lost on the people.

“Mine was humble contribution and I am glad to be reminded of the values to the people.

“Of all the aspirants, I am not aware of any that has clearly defined programmes for the people as we have.

“And quite obviously, you have captured the programmes very well, indicating that yours is a highly articulate and intellectual group.

“Our objective is to fight hunger, poverty, unemployment, insecurity and decayed infrastructure.

“I dare say that you should hold me accountable for this when I get into office.

“But for me to get there, you must work and work among our people to encourage them to deliver their votes to us, first at the primaries and then at the general elections,’’ the aspirant said.

Ondo 2020: Akeredolu’s running mate ‘ll APC’s chance – Party Chieftain

NNN:

An All Progressives Congress (APC) Chieftain in Ondo State, Mr Morayo Lebi, has said that the choice of Mr Lucky Aiyedatiwa as the running mate to Gov. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu will contribute immensely to the party’s victory at the poll.

Lebi stated this at a news conference on Friday in Akure, ahead of the Oct. 10 governorship election in the state.

He described Aiyedatiwa, from Ilaje Local Government area of the state, as a man loved and admired for his generosity and impactful contributions to the party’s growth and development.

According to him, with the selection of Aiyedatiwa as his running mate, the governor had the best choice, even as he urged the people of the state to vote en masse for Akeredolu for a second term.

“Aiyedatiwa is a man well-loved and he is definitely an added factor for engendering more votes for Akeredolu, especially in the southern senatorial district of the state,” he said.

Lebi congratulated the governor for winning the party’s primary, adding that the landslide victory, which he recorded, connoted unflinching confidence in his candidature by party members.

According to him, Akeredolu believes in equity and fairness, hence the ongoing massive infrastructure and other development projects across the state.

Lebi, who was APC flag bearer in the Ondo South Senatorial District in the 2015 election, noted that if Akeredolu could achieve so much within three years, he would develop the state more if he was allowed to spend eight years in office.

He added that Akeredolu was a man who would not renege on his promises, adding that in spite of the economic crunch, the governor was still able to meet up with the basic needs in all sectors of the state’s economy.

INEC threatens to halt Edo, Ondo polls if there is violence

Published

NNN:

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), says it will suspend the Edo and Ondo governorship election process if the actions of political actors led to a breakdown of law and order.

Mr Festus Okoye, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, announced this on Thursday in Abuja after a meeting where stakeholders deliberated on a number of issues, including preparations for the elections.

Okoye said that the commission had observed with deep concern, the escalating levels of violent actions and incendiary statements by political parties, candidates and their supporters, in the run up to the elections.

“These actions include destruction of opponents’ campaign materials such as  billboards, violent campaigns and use of offensive language.

“It is important for political parties, candidates and their supporters to keep in mind that there are extant laws and regulations that must be adhered to, during campaigns.

“The commission will not shirk its responsibility to enforce the rules of the game.

“Consequently, parties and candidates must, on no account, underestimate the resolve of the commission to enforce the rules and regulations and apply appropriate sanctions against those who choose to break them.

“The commission remains determined to conduct peaceful elections in the two states and in the outstanding National and State Assembly bye-elections.”

Okoye said that political parties must realise that Edo and Ondo governorship elections were taking place at a time of a global pandemic and the commission was working assiduously to observe and comply with all health and safety protocols issued by the commission and health authorities.

He said that with the pandemic taking its toll on the citizenry, the people of Edo and Ondo states must be saved from the added burden of violent and raucous elections.

“Political parties must remember that Edo and Ondo governorship elections have strict constitutional and statutory timelines and threats of violence or actual violence can disrupt those timelines and create a constitutional crisis.

“The commission will continue to engage stakeholders in the two states on the need for free, fair, safe and peaceful elections, given that it has committed enormous public resources in preparing for them.

“The commission will view gravely, any disruptive actions by political actors,” he warned.

Okoye said that the commission would work with, and collaborate with the security agencies to contain incidents or threats of violence before and during the elections.

“Regulatory agencies with roles in the elections, especially those dealing with insecurity, hate speech and abuse of mass media, must step up their activities and ensure that people caught breaking the law were held to account,” he said.

The commission reassured the people of Edo and Ondo of its determination to conduct credible and safe elections in the two states, and urged residents to support the process.
