The Ikole Local Government Council in Ekiti said on Thursday that it had donated herbicides and improved maize seeds to 120 farmers from 12 wards in the community.

The Coordinating Director of the local government, Mr Olatunbosun Fasanmi, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Ikole-Ekiti.

Fasanmi said the major objective of the empowerment was to‎ improve agriculture and assist the farmers to boost their farm produce.

A herbicide is a pesticide used to kill unwanted plants.

‎He added that the gesture was also to support the fourth agenda of the administration of the state governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, to improve agriculture in the state.

“We have donated herbicides to‎ 120 farmers in Ikole local government area to improve agriculture and make farming easier for the farmers.

“It is also one of the major agenda‎ of the state governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, with the intention of taking agriculture to the next level in the state.

“Ten farmers were selected from the 12 wards of the local government and improved maize seeds were also given to them,’’ he said.

Similarly, the coordinating director said the council has equally made available to farmers some 2,000 nursery stands of oil palm seedlings, to boost oil palm production in the area.

He said the oil palm seedlings would be sold to interested farmers at subsidized prices.

Fasanmi said the seedlings would be made available to the farmers regularly, without any delay.
