Uju Onwudiwe, a member of the Imo House of Assembly representing Njaba  Constituency, has called on women to increase their proactive participation in Nigerian politics.

Onwudiwe made the call while addressing newsmen in Owerri on Friday.

The lawmaker spoke barely 24 hours after defecting to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) from the Action Alliance (AA) party.

She said that her move was necessary to enable her build stronger capacity.

She described her stay in the AA as a ‘ temporarily necessary ‘ move that helped her achieved her ambition of returning to the Imo Assembly.

Onwudiwe said that she returned to the APC, a ‘parent party’, so as to give full support to the State Governor, Sen. Hope Uzodinma.

She advised women not to wait to be given power but to build grassroots structures that would enable them successfully contest elections.

Onwudiwe regretted that the Imo Assembly had only two women out of its 27 members, saying that it was a big challenge to women in the state.

She, however, felicitated with Paschal Okoli (Orlu) and Samuel Otuibe (Ahiazu Mbaise) who as well defected to the APC from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday.

“It is rather regrettable that there are only two female members of the Imo Assembly. It means a lot of work still needs to be done by the women in politics.

“Power is not given; so we must begin to build capacity through grassroots participation and hopefully, our gender-friendliness will carry everyone along.

“ I decided to return to the parent party that gave me the wings to fly because the AA was only a temporary necessity to help me achieve my political ambition, although we’re still together irrespective of party lines,’’ she said.

Onwudiwe assured Imo people, especially women, that the governor would carry everyone along irrespective of party affiliation.
