Intellectual property: NOTAP commences monitoring and evaluation of IPTTOs



Dr DanAzumi Ibrahim, the Director-General (DG), National Office for Technology Acquisition and Promotion (NOTAP) said the agency had commenced monitoring and evaluation of Intellectual Property Technology Tranfer Offices (IPTTOS).

This is with a view to promoting intellectual property culture in the country.

Ibrahim, represented by the Director, Consultancy Services Department of NOTAP, Dr Adamu Tandama disclosed this in a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday by Raymond Ogbu, Head, Protocol Unit, NOTAP.

“I have met with IPTTOs to ascertain the level of progress of their institutions in the country in patenting their innovations.

“The meeting also aimed at monitoring and evaluation of IPTTOs set up by NOTAP in some knowledge based institutions,’’ Ibrahim said.

The director-general disclosed that the NOTAP was ready to retrain the coordinators of intellectual property  and support them in ways necessary to ensure success of their work.


“Imbibing the culture of intellectual property is very important among researchers, it is one of the major criteria for measuring the strength or otherwise of a university in the developed countries.

“Prior to the establishment of IPTTO, nobody was talking about patenting, but IPTTO has exposed the researchers to the importance of protecting their works.’’

IPTTO is an initiative of NOTAP where centres are set up to refine university/research institute innovation through standardisation of process and products, ready for marketing, sensitising and training universities/research institutes on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR).
