IPCR, Federal University Wukari sign MoU for peace-building, state-building

The Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Federal University, Wukari, (FUW) Taraba State to explore the possibilities of peace building and state building.

made this known on Thursday in a statement by IPCR’s Head of Media, Mr Musa Mato.

Nigeria News Agency reports that peace-building is a process that facilitates the establishment of durable peace and tries to prevent the recurrence of violence by addressing root causes and effects of conflict through reconciliation, institution building, and political as well as economic transformation.

Similarly, state-building refers to the political and historical processes of creation, institutional consolidation, stabilisation, and sustainable development of states.

The MoU will also see both parties collaborate on the promotion of research and education as well as human capacity building.

The DG said that the MoU would provide the framework for monitoring conflicts, their causes, actors, and the dynamics, among other things, with the view to nipping them in the bud.

He expressed the institute’s commitment to collaborating with the university to tackle violence in the state and beyond.

He added that the MoU would guide the collaborative efforts of the two institutions towards the establishment of Peace and Conflict Resolution Centre in Taraba State for the benefit of the state and Nigeria at large.

Prof. Anthony Bature, the Deputy Vice Chancellor of the institution was quoted as saying at the MoU-signing ceremony that the there was no better time to enter into the partnership than now.

He expressed dismay at the violent conflicts in the state, saying that the partnership would help in understanding the dynamics of the conflict so that better approaches could be designed toward dealing with them.

“There is need to study the situation. I am sure the institute has the expertise that can conduct research and proffer solutions,” he quoted Bature as saying.
