Shendam (Plateau) Dec. 18, 2019 (NNN) The Industrial Training Fund (ITF), on Tuesday donated 30 industrial sewing machines to beneficiaries of its Passion to Profession (P2PP), skill acquisition programme in Plateau South Senatorial Zone.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NNN), reports that the machines were given to the beneficiaries in Shendam.

In a brief speech at the ceremony, Mr Joseph Ari, the ITF Director General, said that the machines were to enable them start up their businesses, sustain their families and be employers of labour.

“The P2PP is one of ITF’s special intervention programme to fast-track the growth of technical skills, create jobs and reduce unemployment in line with Federal Government’s policy directive.

“The 30 beneficiaries were trained in pattern drafting and sewing machine operation for two months.

“The training, unlike our other programmes, is unique because we conducted the training using mobile training units to ease access to more people, especially in rural areas,” he said.

Ari said that the programme, which kicked off 2017, had trained 140 Nigerians in tailoring and garment making, who were also given startup packs to establish their outlets.

The ITF boss said that the body was working towards expanding the programmes to more Nigerians, and disclosed that 30 trainees in air-conditioner and refrigerator servicing would soon graduate in Sokoto.

In his remarks, Gov Simon Lalong commended ITF for its laudable programmes, saying that more than 5,000 persons in Plateau were beneficiaries of its skill acquisition programmes.

The governor, who was represented by his deputy, Prof. Sonni Tyoden, said that unemployment had remained an intractable problem and commended the ITF for initiating measures to address the menace.

Earlier in his remarks, the traditional ruler of Shendam, Miskoom Martins Shaldas, had commended ITF for training and equipping youths in his community.

He said that the gesture would reduce youth restiveness, idleness and the temptation to engage in political thuggery. (NNN)
