Kogi election: NGO calls for increased awareness, sensitisation campaign among communities

Participation Initiative for Behavioural Change in Development, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) has called for increased political sensitisation and awareness among communities to reduce incidences of violence in the Nov. 16 governorship election in Kogi.

Dr Mohammed Usman, chairman, Board of Directors of the organisation, made the call while addressing newsmen at a news conference in Lokoja on Thursday.

Usman said that the violent disruption of the PDP primary by gunmen on Tuesday, Aug. 3, was a clear demonstration of the fact that the coast had not yet clear for a peaceful conduct of the exercise in the state.

He said that efforts should be intensified not to disenfranchise electorate, especially at the grassroots, hence the need for intensified sensitisation and proper security arrangement to address possible resurgence of violence before, during and after the election.

The board chairman urged all stakeholders, the politicians, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, civil society organisations and the electorate to work together towards achieving a free, fair and peaceful election.
