Kwara Govt. provides free malaria test, treatment

The Kwara Government has urged residents of the State to avail themselves of the opportunity of the ongoing free malaria screening and treatment to eliminate malaria from the state.

The Programme Manager, Malaria Elimination Programme, Alhaji Abdullahi Nageri, made the call at Erinle, Oyun Local Government Area (LGA) and Lafiagi, Edu LGA of Kwara, during a sensitisation programme on malaria test and treatment.

According to Abdullahi, malaria kills more than any other fever in the country due to lack of knowledge in preventing the disease.

He said the people needed to protect themselves from the disease by sleeping under Long Lasting Insecticidal Net (LLIN).

He warned the residents to desist from self-medication in treating malaria whenever they had a symptom, saying “it is not all fever that is caused by malaria”.

The Programme Manager said the State Government had begun distribution of the nets across 22 facicilities in Oyun LGA.

He advised people to make judicious use of the free nets given to them, rather than either converting it to fishing net or using it as exchange item in the market.

Nageri observed that the fight against malaria was crucial as Nigeria presently ranks high in the contribution to the global burden as far as malaria is concerned.

“Malaria remains a major cause of under-five morbidity and mortality in Nigeria, and prompt diagnosis occupies a strategic position in its management,” he said.

Speaking earlier in his palace, the Elerin-Ile of Erin, Oba AbdulGaniyu Ibrahim, commended the State Government for the laudable programme aimed at reevigorating the health sector in the state.

AbdulGaniyu appealed for continuity of the programme and charged the people of Erin Ile to adhere to the State Government’s directive on the use of the mosquitoe net .

Also, in his remarks, Alahji Haliru Sa’ad, Emir of Lafiagi, commended the state government for the free malaria screening and treatment.

He describsed the sensitisation programme as timely, adding that Edu LGA was the most prone to malaria diseases among other LGAs,

He urged the people to visit health facilities to enjoy free screening and malaria treatment. (NAN)
