Mr Joseph Effiong, an Environmentalist, on Wednesday said that lack of access to Water Sanitation and Hygiene, (WASH) facilities could increase diseases in the country.

Effiong made this known in an interview with Nigeria News Agency in Abuja.

He said that decent WASH facilities should be provided to people, especially in rural communities, to enable them live better and healthy lives.

He said that lack of affordable household facilities was a major challenge facing the people in rural areas as a result of which open defecation was persistent.

The expert said that open defecation was human practice of defecating in an open environment, adding that the open defecation promotes poor health and unhealthy environment, thereby increasing diseases.

According to him, good services such as clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene change lives and enhanced livelihoods.

“When you engage on a survey in water sector, you will really discover that most communities are facing poor access to clean water.

“Many communities across the country are still without access to clean water, decent toilets and poor hygiene.

“Therefore, it is necessary to initiate possible action to prevent further avoidable economics, health and social losses in the communities,’’ he said.

Effiong called on relevant stakeholders to ensure effective implementation of projects in the sector to improve WASH facilities across the country.

He said that the implementation of projects would go a long way in improving the lives of many communities as well as supporting tremendously in achieving Sustainable Development Goals, (SDGs) six.

The expert, however, advised Nigerians to ensure that the facilities provided were maintained efficiently as such would help to prevent infections and spread of diseases in the environment.
