Lalong urges migrants to comply with e-registration

Jos, Dec.4 2019 ( NAN) Gov. Simon Lalong of Plateau has urged migrants in the state to comply with the ongoing e-registration exercise in order to enjoy a peaceful stay in the state.

Lalong, who doubles as Chairman, Northern Governors Forum, made the call in a remark during the inauguration of the e- registration centre for migrants in Jos on Wednesday.

“It is therefore a delight for us here in Plateau to join other states in this ongoing exercise which falls in the third phase of the scheme, ‘’ he said.

He said the registration was in line with the ongoing reforms of the Nigerian Immigration Service aimed at addressing the security challenges in the country as well as creating a conducive environment for migrants to reside in Nigeria.

’’You will agree with me that as a state that has suffered from crises in the recent past, we fully appreciate this exercise and support it because it will help us to strengthen the security of our state,” he said.

The governor said the exercise would also provide reliable data for planning and other engagements of the state which related to migrants.

He said that Plateau had history of harbouring  the highest concentration of foreigners in the country because of its natural gift of weather, hospitable people, economic opportunities and many tourist attractions.

“As a Government, we are eager to receive more and more foreigners in our state, especially investors to various sectors of our economy,’’ he said.

The State Comptroller of Immigration, Abdu Aliyu, said that the command had been  silently repatriating immigrants that violated the immigration extant rules.

“It is our earnest prayers and hope that this exercise will result in a robust, credible and comprehensive database for migrants in Nigeria and greatly improve on the security situation of the state,” Aliyu said.

He called on immigrants in the state to get registered within the stipulated time frame to avoid being imprisoned for a term of 3 years or a fine of N500, 000 or both.
