Munich, Feb. 20, 2019 (dpa/NNN) Three-times Formula One world champion Niki Lauda is on the road to recovery after a lung transplant and influenza.

“Things are looking up. He is hard at work,’’ his son Mathias Lauda told dpa on Wednesday.

The Austrian, Mercedes F1’s non-executive chairman, is spending up to six hours a day in rehab in Vienna to strengthen his body.

“He is fighting like a lion,’’ Mathias said of his father, who turns 70 on Friday.

Lauda had a lung transplant in 2018 and after influenza; he needed further hospital treatment in January.

“He wants to return to normal life as soon as possible,’’ Mathias added, although his father’s attendance at the season-opening F1 grand prix in Australia on March 17 looks unlikely.

“We have set no time limits. It’s important his body regains its old strength,’’ he said.

Lauda’s head was badly burned in a fiery crash at the German Grand Prix in 1976 and his lungs were damaged by toxic smoke. (dpa/NNN)
