A legislator, Mr Gbolahan Yishawu, representing Eti-Osa Constituency 2 in Lagos State House of Assembly, on Thursday empowered some 272 constituents with cash gifts and working tools.

Speaking during the presentation of the items and money at Ikoyi, Lagos, Yishawu said that the essence of empowering his people was to complement efforts of the state government in job creation.

“What I am capable of doing is what I have done. This is part of my campaign promises, and from the little I earn, I spend to purchase these items,’’ he said.

The Nigeria News Agency reports that beneficiaries of the empowerment include graduates of vocational training programmes, students, artisans, the aged, widows and petty traders.

Jamil Agnes, one of the best students who finished from the Lagos State Vocational Training and received a sewing machine appreciated Yishawu for his kind gesture.

She urged other youths to shift attention from white collar jobs to vocations.

Agnes encouraged them to embrace skill acquisition programmes that would help them in future.

Olalere Nosirat, another beneficiary who also got a sewing machine, expressed gratitude to Yishawu and prayed for him.

Emmanuel Obarewa, on his part, could not hold back his joy when he received a computer set from the lawmaker.

Nine students who excelled in this year’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination got cash gifts at the event.

Among other beneficiaries, the aged and widows also went home with cash gifts.

Other items distributed include vulcanising tools, freezers, cooking gas, guitars, food items, make-up kits, machines for cobblers, life jackets and hair dryers.

The state’s Commissioner for Establishment, Training and Pension, Mrs Akinola Ponle, was among dignitaries present at the event.
