Gumel Local Government in Jigawa on Thursday commenced the spraying of insecticides into ponds and drains to eliminate mosquitoes and reduce the prevalence of malaria in the area.
The Council Chairman, Alhaji Aminu Sani, made this disclosure at the launching of the exercise in Gumel.
Sani said the council spent N500,000 for the purchase of six cartons and two jerry cans of insecticide for the fumigation.
Sani, represented by the council’s Deputy Chairman, Alhaji Inusa Habu-Duhuwa, noted that the fumigation was necessary as mosquitoes usually lay eggs in ponds and drains.
The Head of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Department in the council, Alhaji Mohammad Hassan-Ringim, said 20 ad hoc staff were recruited for the five-day exercise.
He urged the ad hoc staff to ensure they used the chemical according to the guidelines to achieve the aim of the exercise. (NAN)
