Man, 21, docked over alleged theft via ATM withdrawal

A 21-year-old man, Onyekachukwu Onyemelukwe, on Friday appeared before an Ebute Meta Magistrate’s Court in Lagos State, charged with  withdrawing N201,000 from the owner’s bank account without his consent.

Onyemelukwe, whose address was not provided, however, pleaded not guilty to the one-count charge of stealing.

According to the prosecutor,  Insp. Jimah Iseghede, the defendant  withdrew the sum from the account of the complainant, Mr Nnamdi Joseph, using his automated teller machine card without his consent.

Iseghede told the court that the defendant committed the alleged offence  on Feb. 11, at Orile Iganmu in the Lagos metropolis.

The noted that theft contravened Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs A.O. Ajibade, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties each in like sum.

She adjourned the case until March 23 for mention.

Stealing is punishable with three years’ imprisonment under Section 287 of the criminal law.
