Man, 22, docked over alleged burglary and theft

Lagos, April 24, 2019 A 22-year-old unemployed man Yusuf Suleimon, who allegedly stole a laptop and iPhone, was on Wednesday arraigned in a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

Suleimon, whose address was not provided, is facing a six-count charge including conspiracy, burglary, and theft.

The police prosecutor, Sgt. Modupe Olaluwoye, said the defendant committed the offences at 2.00 a.m. on March 7, at No. 15 Simpson St., Ebute-meta, Lagos.

Olaluwoye told the court that the defendant broke into Mr Abdulwahab Oseni’s apartment, through the back door and stole his Dell laptop valued at N294,000.

She told the court that the defendant also stole Oseni’s iPhone XS valued at N429, 600 from the apartment.

“My Lord, it was the security guard on duty that noticed the defendant and two other suspects breaking into the apartment and alerted the police.

“The other suspects, who are at large, fled the scene when police arrived.

“The stolen items are, however, yet to be recovered,” Olaluwoye said.

The offences contravene sections 411, 307, 308 and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. (Revised)

News Agency of Nigeria reports that burglary at night carries the punishment of life imprisonment while that of stealing attracts a three-year jail term.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Oluwatoyin Oghere, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N1million with two sureties in like sum.

Oghere said that one of the sureties must be a blood relation; and both must be gainfully employed and their addresses verified by the court.

The chief magistrate also said that the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and should show evidence of three years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

The case was adjourned until June 19, for further hearing.
