Man, 27, docked for allegedly stabbing co-tenants with broken bottle




Lagos, March 18, 2019 A 27-year-old man, Dauda Akinyemi, on Monday appeared before an Apapa Chief Magistrates’ Court, charged with stabbing his co-tenants with a broken bottle on the hand and shoulder respectively.

Akinyemi, a resident of Amukoko area of Apapa in Lagos, is facing multiple charges of assault to which he pleaded not guilty.

The prosecutor, Insp. Ferdinand Asu, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on Feb. 23 at their residence in Amukoko area of Apapa.

Asu said that the defendant stabbed the complainants: Islamiyat Adigun and Fatai Adigun with a broken bottle following an argument which ensued among them.

The prosecutor said that Akinyemi stabbed one of the complainants on the hand and the other on the shoulder.

Asu said that the complainants claimed that they saw Akinyemi peeping at their grandmother while having her bath.

The prosecutor said that when the complainants confronted the defendant, it led to an exchange of words and, subsequently,  Akinyemi was alleged to have assaulted the complainants with a broken bottle.

“’The complainants reported the case to the police and the defendant was arrested for questioning, ” Asu said.

The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Section 173 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Section 173 prescribes a three-year jail term for anyone convicted of assault occasioning harm.

The chief magistrate, Mr Michael Olubi, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum.

Olubi fixed further hearing in the case for April 12.
