The Police in Enugu state on Friday arraigned one Chimezie Anakwe, 32, in an Enugu East Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing car scraps.

Anakwe, who was arrested on Nov. 17, pleaded not guilty to the one-count charge leveled against him.

The Police Prosecutor, ASP Ruben Ihejiobi, told the court that the matter was reported at Abakpa Nike Police Station by the complainant, Anayo Agu.

Ihejiobi told the court that Anakwe allegedly stole the complainant’s car scraps, valued at N58,000.

He said that the complainant was ready for out of court settlement with the defendant.

He added that the complainant gave condition for the settlement, including one month to the accused to pay him up or return the scraps he allegedly stole from his workshop.

The prosecutor said he would verify the addresses of the defendant’s relations, who were in court for his bail.

The Counsel for the defendant, Mr Andu Andu, said that his client was ready for settlement and urged the court to allow him to produce any of his relations as surety.

The Magistrate, Mr C. K. Idu cautioned the defendant against lying in court, citing what he told the court on the first day he appeared in court.

Idu said that the defendant told the court that he had no relations in Enugu when he was asked about his relatives by the court.

He granted the defendant bail in the sum of N10,000 with two sureties in like sum.

He said that each surety should deposit two passport size photographs and that their residential and office addresses should be verified by the prosecutor.

He adjourned the matter to Dec. 13 for continuation of hearing.
