A 36-year-old man, Emmanuel Okolo,  was on Thursday granted bail in the sum of N20,000 by a Tinubu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly stealing a bag of rice worth  N15,000.

The prosecutor, Insp. Ajaga Agboko,  told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Aug. 23 at Epu Town in Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos State.

He said that the bag of rice belonged to the defendant’s friend, Ifeanyi Omogo.

Agboko said that Omogo, a food stuff seller, had  bought 10 bags of rice and loaded them in the boot of his vehicle.

He said instead of Omogo taking  the rice home, he invited Okolo to have a drink with him at a bar.

Agboko alleged that at the bar, Okolo sneaked out and headed to Omogo’s vehicle, opened the boot and stole one bag of rice out of the lot.

He said that the complainant  noticed that a bag of rice was missing when returned to where he parked his vehicle and checked the load

The prosecutor said that the complainant  called the defendant and asked him if he took a bag of rice from the  boot of his vehicle but Okolo denied.

Agboko alleged that Okolo’s effort to steal the rice failed when he was accosted by some policemen on patrol, who queried the defendant to ascertain where he got the bag of rice.

“The defendant claimed that his friend gave it to him. When Omogo was called to confirm, he informed the police that the defendant stole the bag of rice from him,” he said.

Agboko said the offence contravened Section 287 of the Criminal Law of the Lagos State, 2015; which stipulates three years’ imprisonment for theft.

Okolo pleaded innocence of the offence.

The magistrate, Mr T. A. Anjorin-Ajose, granted the defendant bail in the sum N20,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Anjorin-Ajose adjourned further hearing in the case until Oct. 10.
