Manager advocates community involvement in achieving clean, healthy environment

Dr Kasarachi Omitiran, the Project Manager, The TIDEy Project, has called for direct involvement and engagement of communities toward achieving desirable clean and healthy environment.

The TIDEy Project is a social and behavioural change communication and action project, targeted at Nigerian schools and universities.

Omitiran said this in an interview with the Nigeria News Agency in Abuja.

She explained that stakeholders in communities should be involved and engaged in plans for change.

“There is need to create awareness of the hazards through campaigns, get the communities involved and engaged in any plans for change through their stakeholders.

“Ensure each compound has a ventilated improved pit latrine, if they can’t afford to maintain a flush system,” Omitiran said.

The project manager, who reiterated the call for increased sensitisation and awareness on hazards of unhealthy behaviours, called for collective efforts in community cleanness.

According to her, some diseases like cholera and diarrhoea are commonly fuelled by unclean behaviours.

reports that Nigeria is one of the countries in the world with high propensity of unclean behaviours like open defecation.
