Marie Stopes International Organisation Nigeria, an NGO, has donated medical equipment worth millions of Naira to boost Family Planning (FP) in Edo.

Donating the kits to the state Commissioner for Health, Dr David Osifo, in Benin on Thursday, the South South Regional Manager of the organisation, Mrs Mary Ogholi, renewed their commitment to quality reproductive system.

She said the equipment, which are to be distributed to primary and secondary health facilities in the state, is aimed at assisting the Ministry of Health improve its FP services and other sundry areas.

Ogholi said that asides the donation of equipment, the organisation has provided and still plans to provide refreshers and training programmes for health workers as well as women in the state in the area of FP.

“This donation is to reiterate and re-emphasise our commitment to the state’s ministry of health.

“Aside these items, we are giving as our support to the ministry; we intend to continue with our training to some persons in the sector and also meet various targets set out for this year in the area.

“For instance, we hope to meet with our Couple Year Target of 121,000 for the Provider Support Service in the state.

“Already, 54,000 women in the state have been trained to provide Long-Acting Reversible Contraceptive for Provider Support Service (PSS),’’ the official said.

She listed the items donated to include Autoclaves, Intra Uterine Contraceptive Device (IUD), Implant kits, Crocodile Forceps, Cheatle Forceps, Cheatle Forceps Holders and Site Markers.

Responding, the commissioner described the gesture as noble and called for its sustainability.

Represented by Dr Charles Imhanlahimi, the Director, Planning Research and Statistics in the ministry, Osofi stressed the need for people to embrace FP and said the state is doing a lot in this regard.

He, however, urged the organisation to do more in the area of capacity building and also to sustain the collaboration with the state.
