Market sanitation: Iyanoba chairman urges traders compliance

Iyanoba Market Cluster Chairman in Lagos, Mr Solomon Ibezim on Wednesday urged traders to comply with the state government’s stance on sanitation to avoid market closure.

The chairman, who appealed to the state for the provision of more waste bins said that, as a produce market, waste generation was huge daily and only constant evacuation could forestall dirty environment.

Ibezim, in an interview with the Nigeria News Agency in Lagos said that, those bringing in farm produce that generates more waste have been asked to gather the refuse daily and deposit into waste bins for onward evacuation by Lagos state waste managers.

He said that some have been complying with the order while many have refuse to do the needful, making part of the market untidy.

According to him, the leadership of the market will henceforth seal any line of shops or stalls where refuse is found to serve as a deterrent to others to avoid a blanket closure of the market by state.

“The state government is not taking the issue of sanitation lightly, especially in the markets; that is why the market leadership has initiated a weekly enlightenment campaign on good environment.

“We need to learn from the experiences of others that their markets have at one time or the other shut by the government for environmental issues and work toward escaping sanction,” he said.

He said that the provision of more waste bin in the place would encourage compliance, adding that the non-availability of waste facilities in the article portion of the market make people to drop off waste indiscriminately.

Ibezim said that prompt evacuation of waste by state managers was of concern to the market leadership to ensure sanity.

NAN reports that the state officials previously had meetings with leaders of various markets on environment sanitation.
