Ministry ready to encourage young Nigerian scientists – Perm Sec

Mr Mohammed Bello, Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Science and Technology (FMST), on Wednesday reaffirmed the determination of the ministry to encourage young Nigerian scientists.


Bello made the remarks in Abuja during a working visit paid to his office by Odyssey Educational Foundation, a Non Governmental Organisation (NGO), aimed at promoting the education of the girl-child in Nigeria.

He said that the children, especially the girl-child, needed the enabling influence and encouragement to excel in their chosen fields, especially in science and technology.

He hailed the NGO for spearheading the training of women and motivating them for self actualization.

“We welcome that and this ministry has provision s and support for young scientists and therefore we have the capacity to support you.

“We shall work with your organisation to ensure that we continue to promote science and technology in this country,’’ Bello said.

He also told them that the Federal Government was ready to provide opportunities for employment.

He said, “if you want to let a nation to realise growth and development, empower women because when you educate a woman, they say, you educate a nation.’’

Bello also said that the women had to play their role in the fight against corruption as corruption often started from the home.

The Permanent Secretary noted that the women were the ones that reared the little children.

He said that mothers could help to teach the children the right principles of life so that they could grow up imbibing true doctrines.

According to him, the child’s education starts from the mother’s womb and urged proper socialisation to enable children to grow up with discipline and true morals.

“You socialise a child through the social process; to empower a child socialisation matters much  and its of the utmost importance; and the much needed social entity is the family,’’ he said.

Bello told the visitors that it was gratifying to receive them and to learn about what their organisation was doing to bring up young kids and preparing and supporting them on science and technology.

Earlier, Ms Stella Uzochukwu-Denis, Country Director, Odyssey Educational Foundation, said the officials were there to brief the ministry on the activities of the organisation.
