“Mountaineers and scaffolders were ready to start installing the tarp over the stone vaults, which collapsed in places during last week’s fire,’’ Cathedral architect Philippe Villeneuve told broadcaster BFMTV.

From street level in the morning, small figures could be seen high up on a walkway atop the cathedral, at the level where its roof met its walls before the former was destroyed in the ferocious blaze.

According to Villeneuve, with national weather service, Meteo France, predicting rain noted that the main priority is to protect the cathedral from the coming rain.

“It’s to protect the vaults, the outside of the vaults, so that there isn’t any further damage from the rain,’’ Villeneuve added.

Netting has already been stretched over the great stained-glass rose window on the south facade of the cathedral and over its northern gable wall, which has been propped up with wooden beams.
