NAN acting MD, other management staff in Lafia for 2-day retreat

The Acting Managing Director of Nigeria News Agency , Malam Ibrahim Mammaga, management team and Zonal Managers of the agency are in Lafia for a two-day retreat, Nigeria News Agency reports.

Those in attendance at the retreat include: Mr Ephraims Sheyin, Head of Newsroom Operations and Mr Chukwudi Ekezie, Managing Editor.

Others are: Malam Abdulhadi Khaliel, Oladele Ojo, Directors of Administration, Finance and Administration of the agency, respectively and Anthony Mbibi, Head of Procurement unit and Idonije Obakhedo, Head of Lagos Operations.

Others are: Malam Abdullahi Yusuf, NAN Jos Zonal Manager; Dianabasi Effiong, NAN PortHarcourt Zonal Manager; Maureen Atuonwu, NAN Enugu Zonal Manager; and Ojo Mufutau, NAN Ibadan Zonal Manager.

Also in attendance are: Abdullahi Salihu, NAN Bauchi Zonal Manager, Silas Nwoha, NAN Lagos Head of Operations  and Maharazu Ahmed, NAN Kaduna Zonal Manager.

Alhaji Mohammed Baba Busu, the Nasarawa State Correspondent of the agency, commended the management for holding the retreat in Lafia,adding that the retreat would go a long in boosting productivity among the agency’s staff across the country.

” I wish to heartily welcome the acting managing director and other management staff to the Lafia office of the Agency on this auspicious occasion of the two-day management retreat.

“We appreciate the support of the headquarters of the agency over the years and we do understand management’s disposition toward providing a conducive environment to discharge our editorial functions effectively,” Baba Busu said.

Gov. Sule condemns killing of journalist, others in Nasarawa state



Gov. Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa state has condemned the killing of a former treasurer of the State’s Council of  the Nigeria Union of Journalist (NUJ), Mr Benjamin Ekom, by unidentified gunmen.

Mr Ekom, who was also former Secretary-General of the Eggon Cultural Development Association (ECDA), was on Monday, Aug. 3, killed by unidentified persons in his residence at Washo village in Nasarawa-Eggon Local Government Area of the state.

Sule, who spoke through his Chief Press Secretary (CPS), Ibrahim Addra, on Tuesday in Lafia, described the killing of the journalist as “shocking.”

He said the killers of Ekom  and all other innocent citizens were enemies of peace and progress of the state and the country.

He assured that his administration would fish out the perpetrators of the dastardly acts and bring them to justice.

“Let me reassure all citizens of our state that we shall fish out these criminals, and shall not relent in our efforts to secure lives and livelihoods of all inhabitants of the state.

“The security agencies have been put on alert and will pursue until these criminal elements are hunted down and brought to justice.

“Our prayers are with the families of all those who lost their lives in the hands of evil doers in the land,” Sule added.

The governor said that his administration would  remain resolute and focused on the task of building a prosperous and peaceful Nasarawa state.

The News Agency of Nigeria recalls that gunmen had also on July 31, stormed Odu village in Nasarawa Local Government Area, where they shot and killed the village head, Mr Amos Obere.

Similarly, on July 27, five persons were reportedly killed and 14 missing in Dausu village in Toto Local Government Area following a night attack.

Sule charges Nasarawa youths to embrace govt. programmes



Gov. Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State, has charged youths in the state to imbibe the spirit of patriotism and embrace his administration’s youths development programmes.

Sule gave the charge on Tuesday when he received the new National Speaker of the Youth Assembly of Nigeria (YAN), Shuaibu Sani, who paid him a thank-you visit at the Government House, Lafia.

He said that his administration’s focus on industrialisation, education, health and tourism, among others, is targeted at the wellbeing of  youths.

The governor noted that his administration could only succeed if the youths keyed into the its development initiatives with great zeal and patriotism.

He pledged support for the assembly’s plan to hold the inauguration of the new executive in the state.

“This is a positive development since this administration is doing everything to promote the wellbeing of the youths,” he said.

Sule, while congratulating  Sani on his emergence as the national speaker of the assembly, said he was not surprised by his victory considering his antecedents, especially in youth affairs.

“I wish to congratulate you on behalf of the government and people of Nasarawa State. You have made us proud by working so hard to be elected.

“You have being a true ambassador of the state and now will become an ambassador of Nigeria,” the governor said.

He expressed his administration’s determination  to renovate the Sani Abacha Youth Centre, Lafia,  in order to make the centre viable.

“It will promote the image of the state, especially now that the YAN national speaker is from the state,” the governor said.

Earlier, Sani said he was at the government house to show his appreciation to the governor for his support throughout his campaign and to get his blessing to in order succeed.

“We have decided to adopt you as a role model because of your leadership style.

“We feel if we have a leader like you, ready to listen to the yearnings and aspirations of Nigerian youths, we believe the cry of Nigerian youths will be a thing of the past,” Sani said.

He appealed for the governor’s assistance toward a successful inauguration of the new EXCO slated for August 19, in the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Sani was accompanied on the visit by the state YAN Speaker, Jaafar Loko, among other executive members of the group.

Nasarawa NUJ condemns attack, killing of ex-treasurer



The Nasarawa State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), on Tuesday, condemned the attack and brutal killing of its former treasurer, Benjamin Ekom, by unknown gunmen at his residence in Washo village, Nassarawa-Eggon Local Government Area (LGA), of the state.

The NUJ made its position known in a statement jointly signed by its Chairman and Secretary, Salihu Mohammed Alkali and Sunday John, on Tuesday in Lafia.

The Union described the attack on innocent residents of the state by criminal elements as one too many, and called for drastic and proactive measures to be taken to protect lives and properties of residents in all parts of Nasarawa State.

The News Agency of Nigeria , reports that late Ekom, of the Federated Chapel of journalists, was gunned down on Monday night.

The leadership of the union further urged security agencies to fish out killers of the former treasurer, to face the law; and also called for the support of members of the public in helping to unravel the mystery behind the incident, to expose criminal elements in their midst.

It, however, commended the efforts of the federal and state governments towards tackling insecurity, but urged that more be done to ensure that the people were safe to go about their lawful activities without fear, and also to avoid an escalation of the situation.

“The entire journalists in the state also condole with the family and friends of the deceased, and pray God to forgive his shortcomings and grand him eternal rest,’’ the union said in the statement.

NAN also reports that the deceased, who retired as the information officer of Akun Development Area, was the immediate past National Secretary of Eggon Cultural and Development (ECDA).

Gov. AbdulRazak constitutes visitation panels to Kwara Poly, Aviation College



Gov. AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State has approved the constitution of visitation Panel for the Kwara State Polytechnic and International Aviation College, Ilorin.

In a statement, Hajiya Sa’adatu Modibbo-Kawu, Kwara Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Science and Technology said on Monday that the visitation panel will be chaired by Dr. Fatai Bello.

She stated that Bello was Country Representative of the Global Fund, a United Nations’ agency in Nigeria and former Council member of the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Ilorin.

According to her, other members of the panel include Mr Suleiman Talban Lafiagi; AbdulGaniyu Sani, a Chartered Accountant/ forensic audit expert; Muyideen Aliyu, Rtd Director of SSS; Mrs. Yetunde Adekeye, former Principal, School of Midwifery; and Hajiya Asmau Yusuf Saka, Rtd Banker/Accountant.

She disclosed that the Assistant Director of the Kwara State Ministry of Tertiary Education, Science and Technology, Ayansola Justina, will act as the secretary of the visitation panel.

Kawu-Modibbo also said the governor has also accepted the appointment of Prof. AbdulGaniyu Alabi, former Dean, College of Engineering, Kwara State University (KWASU), as chairman of International Aviation College Visitation Panel.

She noted that other members of the visitation panel are: Mr AbdulFatai Olajide, Private Chartered Accountant and Auditor as member, and Mrs Christina Amudipe, a Primary Health Consultant ad member, among others.
