Nasarawa Varsity to benefit from National ICT Infrastructure Backbone

Nasarawa State University has been identified as one of the first educational institutions to benefit from the first phase of the National Information Communications Technology Infrastructure Backbone (NICTIB) project.

The Managing Director of Galaxy Backbone, Mr. Yusuf Kazaure disclosed this on Wednesday in Abuja when the Deputy Vice Chancellor (DVC), of the university, Prof. Olayemi Akinwunmi, led a delegation on a courtesy visit to him.

Kazaure said his organisation is prepared to extend its national fibre broadband connectivity services to the University.

He also promised to extend off-peak internet access to the institution so that students and lecturers would benefit in terms of studies and researches.

“Galaxy Backbone prides itself as a learning organisation, as we place a lot of efforts in training our people and facilitating the training of our customers and stakeholders.

“Galaxy Backbone will be glad to collaborate with the University in areas that speak to capacity building and cyber security,’’ he said.

Kazaure said that Galaxy Backbone is the only corporate organisation that is 100 per cent owned by the Federal Government with an Uptime Institute tier III certified data center.

The Nigeria News Agency a team was set up to liaise with the delegation from the University to translate the agreements reached at the meeting.

Earlier, Akinwumi solicited the collaboration of the Galaxy Backbone to explore areas to enhance digital services for capacity building in the institution.

He noted that galaxy backbone’s optical fibre roll out across the country passed through Nasarawa State, specifically right in front of the University.

He underscored the need to explore the opportunity to improve the huge internet connectivity challenges that had lingered within the institution for many years.

The DVC said the digital services offered by galaxy backbone would enhance post-graduate studies ranked second in the country, after the University of Ibadan.

Dr. Uche Mbanaso, the Director for the Cyberspace Studies, NSU, explained that hosting data in the country was one of the things he had championed since his days in the public service.

He noted that all government data must be hosted in-country, specifically within Galaxy Backbone data center

The Nigeria News Agency reports The DVC and his team were taken on a tour to the National Shared Services Center (NSSC) which housed the Galaxy Backbone data center and network operations center..
