NAWOJ urges security agencies to protect women’s rights in Kogi

Mrs Ann Olurinde, Chairperson, National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Kogi chapter has called on the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and other security agencies to protect rights of women in the state.

Olurinde made the appeal during a courtesy visit to the state Commandant of NSCDC, Mr Peter Maigari, in his office on Wednesday in Lokoja.

She noted that women had been relegated to the background in the past, a development she said had affected their full participation in governance and election.

Olurinde urged the commandant to ensure full security for the women folk, emphasising that violence against women was on the increase and should be checked.

She also implored the commandant to join women in the sensitisation and advocacy programme, for women to halt violence against them in politics.

Olurinde, however, commended the commandant for his support in curbing crime in the state and promised to collaborate with security agencies to reduce crime to the barest minimum in the state.

Responding, Maigari assured NAWOJ of maximum support, whenever the need arise.

He urged parents to always check the conduct of  their children and ensure that they do not mix with wrong peers or engage in social vices.

Maigari also commended NAWOJ for the initiative to visit the command and advised its members to always carry out thorough investigation on any matter before publication.

He said the advice became necessary in order not to misinform members of the public.
