NCAC urges Nollywood stakeholders to showcase Nigeria’s Cultural Tourism

Otunba Segun Runsewe, Director- General, National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC), has called on Nollywood filmmakers and other stakeholders  to use their works in showcasing Nigeria’s rich Cultural Tourism on global stage.

He made the call in an interview with Nigeria News Agency on Wednesday in Abuja.

reports that Cultural Tourism is a subset of tourism concerned with traveler’s engagement with a country or region’s culture.

It specifically focuses on  lifestyle of  people , history , art, architecture, religion(s), and other elements that helped shape their way of life.

According to Runsewe, as Nollywood evolves and its players and products gain more acceptance globally, there is need to use it as a vehicle to promote Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage to attract tourists.

He noted that it was time Nollywood borrow a clue from its Bollywood counterpart that uses its films to showcase culture in telling their stories to the rest of the world.

He said: “We as a council is appealing to our Nollywood industry to look inward, believe in ourselves and showcase our cultural tourism.

“We must be able to add value to ourselves for others to believe in us, and that is the thinking of NCAC as the custodian of our culture.

“The Indians will tell you they use their songs to win women’s hearts, and the Chinese will tell you they use their food, our industry should use the movie to promote what define us as well.

“The Cultural sector is not about dancing and singing, it s about adding economic value to society as well,” he said.

The D-G however commended the Nigerian motion picture industry’s exponential growth over the years, adding that it has created jobs for many Nigerians, although it was a largely self-sustained.

“One thing you must understand is that the Nollywood is private sector driven, and we can only appeal to let them know that we need to showcase our culture.”
