NCP flagbearer advises voters not to sell votes

By Lydia Ngwakwe

Lagos, Feb. 21, 2019 Dr Yunusa Tanko, Presidential Candidate, National Conscience Party (NCP), on Thursday in Lagos, warned the electorate not to mortgage their future by selling their votes.

Tanko told the News Agency of Nigeria that a voter who sells his power would not have the right to complain when the person he voted for eventually gets into office.

“If you buy or sell votes, what you are doing is mortgaging your future, and the person you have voted in will have the right to do whatever he likes to do if he finds himself in power.

“Once he gets into the seat of authority, you cannot blame him for not giving you electricity, water, good road, free education for your children as well as security of life and property.

“These are facts that when they buy your votes, they have already bought your conscience. And there is nothing you can do about it,’’ Tanko said.

According to him, elections are not time for sentiments but a time for reality.

The NCP flagbearer also urged voters not to vote for a candidate because of religion or tribe, as those were not recipe for growth.

He explained that the recipe for growth include quality, competency and capacity to lead a country and its people to greatness.

According to him, the country is retrogressing and there is need to move forward and have credible leaders.

Tanko urged stakeholders to constantly sensitise eligible voters that credible voting was the best way to go rather than vote buying.

He urged the Independent National Electoral Commission to ensure that the law took its cause on any individual found engaging in electoral malpractices.

He said that when a person is punished by the law, it would serve as deterrent to others.

NNN reports that the Presidential and National Assembly election, earlier slated for Feb. 16, is  now scheduled to hold on Feb 23.

Also, the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections, earlier fixed for March 2, will now hold on March 9.
