NEMA intensifies sensitisation on flooding to 21 local government area in Rivers.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) says the agency has intensified sensitisation on flooding to the 21 flood-prone local government areas in Rivers.

Mr Ibarakumo Waldon, the South South Zonal Coordinator of NEMA made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday in Port Harcourt.

Waldon said that the agency had intensified the awareness on flood disaster control to communities likely to be affected by flood this season in their various local government areas.

“We have started our preparation on flood control by sensitising communities and LGAs like Ahoada East, Ahoada West, Nbiama, Joinkarama.

“We have plans to expand the outreach to other communities in the state.

“We also contact them from time to time in case of any emergency to sustain the sensitisation till flood is over,” he said.

The coordinator said that the agency was also mapping out higher grounds for safer places in preparation for any flood emergency.

“We are also intensifying efforts to collaborate with the state government and stakeholders to see that quick response will be given to areas with flood challenge this season,” said.

Walson called on state government and stakeholders to give priority to issues of flooding in the region.

“State governments in South South Region have important roles to play in flood response, mostly now that the intensity of flooding is becoming more than it used to be.

“We are planning to have a stakeholders meeting in the state to make sure that grounds will be ready for any emergency flooding in the state.

“We have done on the spot assessment on the impact of flooding in some affected areas and we have sent the report to the headquarter to look at the recommendations and respond,” he said.
