New Yam Festival: Gov. Ugwuanyi urges communities to uphold culture

Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State on Sunday urged communities in the state to always uphold their culture as it would bring unity, development and understanding among them.

Pia Odio means preparation of wooden spear for harvesting yam.

He said that Pia Odio was so construed because in Awgu dialect, the traditional wooden spear for yam harvest is called Odio.

The traditional ruler said the ceremony was devoid of rituals and added that it was a joyous gathering in the Igwe’s palace in which one among Omelali members was nominated to prepare the yam harvest.

The Chairman of the occasion, Chief Humphrey Ejimba, said that festival marked the beginning of a new season in Awgu.

Ejimba called on all illustrious sons and daughters of Awgu Egbeleli to come together with their good suggestions for the betterment of Awgu.

He said that there was relative peace in the communities in spite of the fact that one of the three communities had yet to get its traditional ruler.

Uduji said this was as a result of the unity that existed in Enugu State since 2015 that Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi assumed office.

Uduji commended Ugwuanyi for being present at the festival.

He urged the youth to continue with the direction they were going, noting that the event had united the three autonomous communities.

In the same vein, the National President Awgu Youths Association, Chief John Nwankwo, attributed most of the progress recorded in Awgu to the youth.

Nwankwo said that the youth had executed different developmental projects for the benefit of the people.

He praised the three autonomous communities for the peace and harmony that was existing among them.
