NGO advocates criminalisation of discrimination against PWDs

Dr Cally Cussons, President, Network for Youths and Women Entrepreneurship (ANYWE), an NGO, has urged government to criminalise all forms of discrimination against Persons With Disabilities  (PWDs) in Nigeria.

Cussons, who made the call in an interview with Nigeria News Agency on Thursday in Abuja, also said persons with disabilities should be given equal opportunities in the society.

The president of the NGO said that this would give them the opportunity to contribute their quota to the development of the country.

He explained that discrimination against persons with disability was inimical to the collective development of Nigeria.

“Government should be able to make laws to criminalise all forms of discrimination against PWDs, especially in terms of accessibility opportunities, language/linguistic, using PWDs in comedy, employment,” Cussons said.

He called on leaders of PWD organisations to be honest with their pursuit of good life for their members and avoid the political and financial dishonesty.

“Persons With Disabilities , as individuals, should come to the realisation that value creation is the currency for buying relevance, “he said.

This he said they could do by making themselves assets to their various communities rather than being liabilities.

He, however, expressed with concern that some persons with disabilities were given opportunities but mismanaged them.

He called for collaboration between government and stakeholders to reposition persons with disability to enable them to take their rightful place to contribute to the economic prosperity of the country.
