NGO, KEPA sensitise residents against indiscriminate dumping of refuse in Kaduna

An NGO, Youth Farm Ambassadors Network, Kaduna chapter in collaboration with the Kaduna State Environmental Protection Authority (KEPA) on Monday sensitised residents of Sabon Tasha against dumping refuse on roads.

Mr Treasure Albert, the National Coordinator of the NGO, at one day sensitisation and clean up campaign activity against indiscriminate dumping of refuse in the state, expressed dismay over the manner residents dump refuse indiscriminately.

He said that the sensitisation was part of the NGO’s programme to remind residents of the need to keep their environment clean.

He said that the residents’ refuse disposal habit had become a challenge and a source of worry to the state due to the environmental health hazards it could cause.

Albert said that the NGO in collaboration with KEPA would offer solutions to the waste management challenge created by increase in population.

Usman Lawal, KEPA’s Director, Public Health and Laboratory Science, said the agency would provide more designated collection centres closer to the residents and reduced the practice of indiscriminate dumping of waste.

He appealed to the residents to bag their waste properly so as not to litter the streets with refuse.

He urged them to also report people dumping of refuse in unauthorised places to the government for prompt action.

Laraba Tanko, the Women leader of Sabo market, commended the NGO and KEPA for the gesture.

She called on women in the market to show good example by keeping their surroundings clean.

Mr Marcus Baya, the community leader appealed to the agency to provide security on refuse collection points to ensure proper dumping of refuse by residents and motorists.

News Agency of Nigeria reports that members of the NGO, staff of the authority and the Ministry of Environment took part in a 5 m road-walked, while picking up nylons and plastics waste.
